Orange Amplification is a British electric guitar and PA amplifier manufacturing company, famous for its distinctive bright orange tolex covering on amplifier heads and speaker cabinets. It was founded in 1968 by Clifford Cooper of London. Orange amps and P.A. (public address) were made by Clifford Cooper and Matthew Mathias. The Orange-colored amps were well-built and were used by many notable guitarists from 1969 to 1981.
Since '95, Cliff Cooper is once again making Orange amplifiers in England, with the exception of the small Crush Practice Combo amps, which are made in Korea.
Orange amplifiers are primarily high-gain vacuum tube (or valve in Britain) amp heads, designed to be coupled with a matching speaker cabinet. In the 1970s, Orange also made 'hybrid' PA amps that coupled a solid state mixer stage with a tube (valve) power stage. In recent years, Orange has also produced solid state guitar combo amps (speaker and amplifier in one assembly), as well as amplifiers for bass guitar and other audio products.
